On Thursday, President Xi Jinping promised to increase China's financial assistance to the continent that is expanding at the fastest rate in the world by around $51 billion. He also backed further infrastructure projects and promised to generate at least one million jobs. <\/p>
Beijing, the largest two-way lender in the world, expressed a willingness to shift its focus from financing expensive infrastructure to selling developing nations the cutting-edge and environmentally friendly technologies that Chinese companies have made significant investments in.<\/p>
Nevertheless, Xi assured delegates from over fifty African countries that the second-biggest economy in the world would fund thirty infrastructure projects throughout the continent rich in natural resources and provide 360 billion yuan ($50.70 billion) in funding. <\/p>

Of the finance pledge, 210 billion yuan, according to Xi, would be distributed through credit lines and at least 70 billion in new investment from Chinese enterprises. Smaller sums would be given through other projects and military help. <\/p>

This year's Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit, which took place in the Chinese capital, outlines a three-year plan for China and all of the African states\u2014with the exception of Eswatini, which continues its relationship with Taiwan. <\/p>

Xi also mentioned thirty infrastructural linking projects, saying, \"China is ready to launch 30 clean energy projects in Africa,\" offering to co-operate on nuclear technology and tackle a power deficit that has delayed industrialisation efforts.<\/p>

However, the Chinese leader only committed to unilaterally extend market access at the Dakar summit in 2021, failing to repeat his promise for the Asian behemoth to purchase $300 billion worth of African commodities. <\/p>

Analysts claim Beijing can't keep its promise because of its very stringent phytosanitary regulations for market access. <\/p>
\"We are ready to assist in the development of the African Continental Free Trade Area, and deepen logistics and financial co-operation for the benefit of trans-regional development in Africa,\" Xi stated.<\/p>

At least 129 prisoners were killed in an attempted jailbreak at the capital's largest prison in Congo, the majority of them during a stampede, according to police on Tuesday. <\/p>

According to a preliminary evaluation, 24 prisoners were killed by \"warning\" bullets while attempting to flee from Kinshasa's overcrowded Makala Central Prison early on Monday, Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani stated on the social media platform X. <\/p>

He stated that order had been restored at the prison, some of which had been destroyed by fire. \"There are also 59 injured people taken into care by the government, as well as some cases of women raped,\" he said. <\/p>

Capacity of the prison <\/p>

With 1,500 beds, Makala is the largest prison in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, housing approximately 12,000 prisoners, the majority of whom are awaiting trial, Amnesty International said in its latest country report. The facility has recorded previous jailbreaks, including in 2017, when an attack by a religious sect freed dozens.<\/p>

According to residents, gunfire inside the prison began on Sunday night about midnight and continued until Monday morning. Rights campaigners have contested a senior government official's prior claim that only two deaths were confirmed during the incident. <\/p>

Videos that looked like they came from the jail featured bodies on the ground, several of them with obvious wounds. Inmates were shown in another video being carried into a car by people who looked to be dead. <\/p>

Not a warning <\/p>

The prison is situated in the city center, five kilometers (3 miles) from the presidential palace, and there were no indications of forcible entry. <\/p>

Mbemba Kabuya, the deputy minister of justice, informed the local Top Congo FM radio station that prisoners in one of the prison's wings had planned the attempted escape from within. <\/p>

In the hours that followed the attack, the road to the prison was cordoned off while authorities convened a panel to investigate the incident.<\/p>
<\/p>
Activists claim that because Makala and other jails in the Congo are so overcrowded, famine is a common cause of death. This year, a large number of prisoners have been released as part of attempts to clear the jail system. <\/p>
<\/p>
The incident was described as a \"premeditated act of sabotage\" by Justice Minister Constant Mutamba, who also threatened to take harsh action against anyone who \"instigated these acts of sabotage.\" <\/p>

Along with other measures to ease overcrowding, he said that authorities would construct a new prison and forbade the transfer of prisoners from the jail.<\/p>

Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe is wanted on suspicion of killing Margaret Mbitu, his girlfriend, whose body was discovered in a car at Boston's Logan International Airport on October 31. <\/p>

Kangethe is scheduled to appear in Boston's Suffolk Superior Court on Tuesday to answer to accusations of murder, according to Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga. Kangethe departed Nairobi on Sunday. <\/p>

\"I would like to restate my dedication and assistance, as required, to the United States of America and specifically the prosecution team as they move forward with the upcoming stage of the case,\" Ingonga stated on Monday. <\/p>

According to the prosecution, the extradition order had earlier been issued by the court in July.<\/p>

Kangethe, who has renounced his U.S. citizenship, was involved in a dramatic escape from a police cell after his Kenyan lawyer visited him in January. Disciplinary action was taken against four police officers who were on duty when he escaped. He was rearrested a week later, and his extradition case continued.<\/p>
Mbitu, Kangethe's girlfriend, worked as a health care aide in Halifax, Massachusetts. Her family reported her missing on October 30, the day she was last seen leaving the office. <\/p>

The prosecution in Kenya stated during the extradition case hearing that the preliminary investigation revealed Mbitu had left her place of employment and gone to Lowell, Massachusetts, where Kangethe resided, together with him. <\/p>
<\/p>
Prosecutors added that Kangethe was also discovered in possession of the deceased's personal belongings.<\/p>
